Summer Tree Care Tips for Colorado Homeowners

Keep Your Landscape Thriving All Season Long

As summer heats up across Colorado, the warm, dry months can be tough on trees, especially if they’re not properly watered or protected from pests. Whether you're a long-time homeowner or just getting to know your yard, our essential summer tree care can help your landscape stay healthy, resilient, and beautiful through the hottest months of the year.

Smart Watering Tips for Colorado Summers

Colorado’s high altitude and dry climate make watering one of the most important things you can do for your trees. But not all watering is created equal.

Here's how to do it right:

1. Deep Soaks Beat Daily Sprinkles
Water slowly and deeply 2–3 times per week. Shallow watering encourages surface roots, which are more vulnerable to heat and drought.

2. Aim for the Drip Line
Water around the outer edge of the canopy—this is where the tree’s feeder roots absorb the most moisture and nutrients. Avoid watering right at the trunk.

3. Choose Your Timing
Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and give moisture time to reach the root zone.

4. Support Young Trees
Newly planted trees need extra attention. For the first two years, make sure they’re watered consistently, especially during heat waves or windy spells.

Summer Pest Watch: What to Look Out For

Rising temperatures also bring a rise in insect activity. Some pests can be more than just a nuisance—they can damage or even kill your trees if left unchecked.

Be on the lookout for signs of:

  • Ips beetles, aphids, mites, and borers

  • Leaves that are curling, yellowing, or turning brown

  • Sawdust-like material near the trunk or limbs (a sign of boring insects)

  • Unusual branch dieback, especially at the tips

  • Sticky residue or oozing sap

Early detection is key. If something doesn’t look quite right, give our Plant Health Care team a call. We use responsible, effective treatments that protect your landscape without harming the environment.
